Letter dating and mark-up procedures

Letter dating - The dates used in the Archive list are, where possible, the author dates for the letters. Where a document has no author date we use the post mark date. If this is not available,  we make a best-guess attribution, these always being noted as such.

Letter mark-up procedures - Occasionally, letters contain illegible entries or are physically damaged, making transcription impossible. Whenever a letter is illegible, for whatever reason, we use square brackets [ ] to indicate this and we offer any clarification about an entry that might be available within these brackets.
